Like most silversmiths of the period, the Kalo Shop produced coffee and tea sets for its upscale clientele. These luxurious and expensive items seem quaint and distant today. But in the early 20th century, entertaining meant serving coffee or tea from an elegant silver set. Kalo and Lebolt both made impressive tea and coffee services (as well as chocolate sets). The Kalo examples below are substantial, heavy, and exceedingly beautiful and well made.
The massive 7-piece set shown here on the left (click on the thumbnail for a full-size image), with its large-scale coffee and tea pots, hot water kettle and stand, sugar bowl (with spoon), creamer, and waste bowl is the nicest Kalo coffee set we've ever seen. It weighs a hefty 232 troy ounces, or nearly 16 pounds of sterling silver. The modern-looking paneled set shown here is very stylish and contemporary. Even smaller sets like this and this are wonderful objects.

Coffee / tea set with matching tray. Seven pieces (7), melon-ribbed form on large ring feet, including tray, composed of tea pot, coffee pot, creamer, open sugar with spoon, round waste bowl, tray, and kettle on four-footed stand with burner, all with applied B mono. Finials and insulators are ivory. Kettle stand has removable burner with adjustable iris that has long handle with ivory tip. Tray is a larger version of the one on p.48 of Darling's Chicago Metalsmiths presented to Clara Welles by her employees on the 25th anniversary of the Kalo Shop: oval, with eight lobes. Applied B mono at each end. Spoon has heart-shaped bowl, slightly pointed end, engraved B mono on end.

Coffee set, three pieces (3) including coffee pot, creamer, and open sugar, on conforming Kalo tray. Paneled forms on round spreading feet, with looping hollow handles and tapered bodies. Long arching spout on coffee pot, long straight pointed spout on creamer. Applied B mono on sides. Ivory finial and insulators on coffee pot. Sturdy and tight -- a few lines in the ivory but otherwise in excellent condition.

Tea set, three piece plus tray (4), consisting of tea pot, cream jug, sugar bowl, and tray. Lovely flat-bottomed squat "Bean Pot" shape with rounded hollow handles on all vessels. Round tray with wide raised border. Tea pot has ivory insulators and turned ivory finial. All pieces with applied B monogram. Hammered surface. Engraved on underside in script is "Carrie Bahrenburg / July 3 / 1909-1914"

Coffee / tea set with matching tray [and pitcher], six pieces (6) including tray, composed of tea pot, coffee pot, creamer, open sugar, tray, and pitcher, all with applied ML mono. All pieces with outward-pointing flutes, tapering upward to slender necks, with flat tapered bottoms, flat hollow handles rising to rounded points at the top, applied wire to rim. Tea pot and coffee pot have ivory insulators and finials, rounded fluted tops. Tray is heavy, with wide edge and eight alternating short and long lobes, heavy applied wire to underside of rim.

Coffee and teapot with turned ebony finial and insulators. Open sugar and cream jug with hollow handles. Tea caddy with matching ebony finial. Applied leaves at the ends of the spouts on both pots. Scrolling handles.

Coffee set, three (4) pieces, small-scale, composed of coffee pot, tea pot, sugar, and creamer, on conforming round lobed Kalo tray. All pieces have plain, simple bulging form that tapers downward, and small round flaring feet. Coffee and tea pot have hollow looping handles, wide hinged lids, ivory finials and insulators. Creamer and sugar have curved looping strap handles. Applied wire to rim and softly hammered surfaces. Pieces have engraved "E. J. I. / Christmas, 1923" on bottoms. Teapot has engraved "E. J. I. / October 30, 1925" on bottom.

Coffee pot, sugar, and creamer have six outward-pointing flutes, tapering upward to slender necks, with flat tapered bottoms, and flat top hollow handles, applied wire to rim. Coffee pot has ivory insulators, rounded fluted top. Tray is round, fluted, with flat bottom and raised wide fluted border, seven flutes total. All four pieces have engraved "Anna Korshak" on bottom. Applied wire to rims. Lovely hammering.

All vessels have flat bottoms and sides that briefly flare upward then taper inward at the top, and flat-topped harp-shaped hollow handles. Coffee pot has ivory finial and insulators and long spout arching up from the wide bottom; sugar has silver finial. Creamer has wide tall angular spout. Pieces have engraved "Louise Julia Foberg / December 25, 1916" on bottoms. Applied wire to rims. Lovely hammering.
