▪ Kalo Repoussé ▪
Repoussé Index |
Most Kalo objects are free from ornamentation other than the subtle hammering that emphasizes their hand-made quality and reinforces the Arts & Crafts tenet of avoiding gratuitous refinement. These individual planishing marks served as facets that softened and reflected light, adding a gentle glow to the silver. And the distinctive pattern of these small dimples made each piece different from other similar examples.
Kalo craftsmen also relied on applied (soldered on), or engraved (scratched in) monograms to decorate objects and give them an individual identity. While other makers such as Arthur Stone or Mary Knight were admired for their elegant chasing (hammering in a design from the front with metal punches), Kalo used this technique sparingly.
However, Kalo did produce a small number of items, primarily for children or as commemorative pieces, that were decorated with interesting repoussé (embossing from the back) work. Some is charming, or lifelike and elegant, or whimsical, or even cubist in appearance, and some is far more accomplished than others. But it's all fairly unusual and worthy of note.
