Marks -- Detective Work
The Kalo Shop began producing handwrought metal objects along with other crafts in 1900 (for the Shop's history, click here). The first mark was KALO -- or in rare cases KALO STERLING, since the output of the Shop back then was largely copper. This was soon followed for a few years by HAND BEATEN / AT / THE KALO SHOP / PARK RIDGE / ILLS. In 1912, when the Shop opened a store on 54th Street in New York City, the mark was changed to HAND WROUGHT / AT / THE KALO SHOPS / CHICAGO / AND / NEW YORK.

While the normal mark from this early period included both cities, some pieces say KALO SHOPS rather than KALO SHOP, but list just CHICAGO rather than CHICAGO / NEW YORK. According to Chicago metalwork expert Darcy Evon, this transitional mark was used briefly in the latter half of 1912 before the New York shop opened. See chart below for summary.
By far the most common mark is simply HAND WROUGHT AT KALO SHOP, which was used for the remaining life of the operation starting in mid-1917. However, there were two other marks that appeared briefly. From 1929 to 1932, the Kalo Shop changed the mark to STERLING / HAND WROUGHT / THE KALO SHOP / CHICAGO / U.S.A. It's unlikely that Welles included the country name because of export considerations, although she did enter Kalo objects in exhibitions and some of these could have been abroad. It may have been added for reasons of national pride, but nobody is certain.
The other unusual mark was from the Kalo Shop's aborted Norse Line. While some Chicago silversmiths sold objects through department stores in New York and the Midwest, the Kalo Shop did not. Robert R. Bower, a Kalo employee for nearly five decades, told American Silversmith magazine (Summer / 1992): "We had an arrangement with a sales organization to sell a wholesale line consisting of 40 items of all new Kalo sterling designs that were handwrought and of substantial weight. It was called the Norse line. All the samples were ready to go, then the market crashed in 1929. That was the end of the wholesale business." Norse Line products were marked either STERLING / HAND WROUGHT / KALO / SILVERSMITHS NS17 or just STERLING KALO NS57, or STERLING / HANDWROUGHT / AT / THE KALO SHOP / NS40L (the numbers at the end varied but usually started with NS, although we have seen some that lack the "S").
Virtually no pieces were signed by the individual makers. While other Shops of the period such as Arthur Stone marked which silversmith made each piece, Welles discouraged this practice. She did allow silversmiths to use the facilities after hours to create their own items. It is possible that a few of these objects made as gifts or sample pieces were stamped both with the Kalo mark and the craftsman's initials. A very early copper letter holder with extensive repoussé work does seem to have the initials HHF or HHE on the bottom of the front surface. Note that even in this case these were separate from the PARK RIDGE mark on the bottom, and were scratched in rather than stamped.
We've seen just two instances of individually signed Kalo pieces with makers' initials stamped as part of the mark -- a Daniel Pedersen sauce or mayonnaise set (bowl, underplate, and matching ladle) marked:
STERLING / HAND WROUGHT / AT / THE KALO SHOP / *DP*
and a small simple oval brooch with an open center, made by Robert R. Bower and signed:
RRB STERLING KALO

A small Kalo bowl of ours shows an interesting mark -- the word NORSE appears to have been stamped above SILVERSMITHS, then was polished out and replaced with the word "KALO" in the center. In the photo below you can see remnants of the "N" in front of the "K" in KALO, the "O" under the "K", the bottom of the the "S" under the "L", and the "E" under the "O". Perhaps the Shop was thinking about using NORSE as a brand rather than KALO, but had second thoughts.
It's not always easy to figure out what dates correspond precisely with what marks. One way to make intelligent guesses is by analyzing any engraved or applied inscriptions. Customers often purchased silver to commemorate an event, celebrate a holiday, or serve as an award or trophy. There are several problems with this dating approach however. First, while inscriptions were usually executed by Kalo Shop silversmiths, engraving was occasionally done elsewhere. Second, engravings on small items like spoons, jewelry, and napkin rings are fairly meaningless as dating indicators, since the accompanying marks are small and incomplete for space reasons. Finally, it is possible that engravings were done well after an item was purchased, or on items that were made earlier and taken from stock rather than made at the time of the order.
One other Kalo mark variation is the addition of an asterisk, or star. We've seen three instances of this, on a small lobed bowl (marked * / STERLING / HAND WROUGHT / AT / THE KALO SHOP / 18L), on an 11" fluted tray (marked * / STERLING / HAND WROUGHT / AT / THE KALO SHOP / G11F) and on a salad set with pear-shaped bowls and convex handles, marked:
The chart below illustrates first-hand observations of the relationship between inscriptions and marks. If anyone reading this has any other important examples, or can fill in any gaps, please contact us.
Kalo's numbering system is confusing. In the early years the Shop marked each piece or grouping with consecutive serial numbers. Later pieces were usually stamped with model numbers, and while there were a few rules, the numbers and letters in its marks became a hodgepodge.
According to Kalo records at the Chicago Historical Society, all of the following were Kalo model numbers on just bowls:
1, 1F, 1L, 3, 3MPF, 3S, 6, 7, 8FB, 8L, 10F, 14 R, 16, 18, 18L, 18B, 18BH, 18C, 18SB, 19, 20, 20H, 20LH, 20X, 20W, 20WX, 20WSX, 20WB, 20WSS, 20WS, 20WSB, 21W, 23, 23J, 25, 26-3, 28, 28M, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 36, 38, 38B, 38LS, 39, 55H, 56, 56X, 57, 59, B59, 60, 61, 62, 63, 64, 68, 69, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74A, 74B, 75, 76, 77, 80, 81, 82, 85B, 88, 90, 91, 91L, 92, 94, 96, 97, 98, 99, 100, 102, 108, 109, 110, 111, 112, 113, 114, 115, 116, 117, 118, 118S, 118SP, 118B, 119, 120, 120A, 121, 122, 124, 128, 128S, 129, 130, 130M, 131, 132, 133, 198, 198S, 201, 286, 187, 323, 711F, 5811, 5812, A1, A2, AD1, A4S, BB1, B2-9, B75, D, D2-4, D10, D11, D12, D13, D14, D15, D16, E64, E64L, F5DB, F118L, K310, K311, L737, M23L, M85, M23L, M285P, M323, M323L, N123, N558, N845S, N901, N901S, N903, PB1, PB2, P117, P118, P119, R, RM1, R10, RGD, R102, S1H, SP1, SP1L, S40C, S41C, T480, U18, U1813F, U20, 980, W980S, W981, X62M, X65, X65M, X65S
