Mary Gage / Lillian Pines / Jo Michels (page 4)

A contemporary and friend of Mary Gage was Lillian H. Rosenblum Pines, who was born in 1894 in Manchester, NH.  According to one Internet source, Pines graduated from Radcliffe College in 1915 and had a retail store in the Westbury Hotel on Madison Avenue in New York City.  She died at the age of 100.  Gage and Pines clearly influenced each other.

Both Pines and Gage used wirework and beads.  Pines pieces are sometimes more naturalistic (in the form of fans or lifelike flower baskets, for instance), and she often used twisted wire and filigree details.  Both artists produced interesting scimitar-form pieces.

Jo Michels round pin with faceted amethyst in the style of Lillian PinesJo Michels mark

Another New York jeweler, Jo Michels, produced this brooch centering a faceted amethyst.

Notice the similarities with the Lillian Pines pin (above right)

The Jo Michels pin above is very much like the work of Lillian Pines, and is atypical for her.  Michels, a New York City jeweler in the 1940s and 1950s, usually produced round or oval repoussť pieces like the one below:

Typical Jo Michels oval repousse pin

The oval Michels piece measures 2-1/2" W and 3/4" H.  The circular Michels pin with a faceted amethyst measures 1-7/8" round.  Both are signed with a small applied nameplate that is also very much like those used by Gage and Pines at times.

HANDWROUGHT / STERLING / 150.  The Michels pin is 1-9/16" W and

is marked JO MICHELS / STERLING

Interestingly, we found a Madeline Turner pin that has an almost identical ceramic insert to one found in a Jo Michels pin.  The insert is unsigned.  Did one make both inserts?  Or did they simply purchase them from the same source?
