Arts & Crafts candlesticks, especially those made by Kalo, are wonderful objects -- tall, elegant, softly hammered, heavy, and very useful. Kalo produced several types of the same basic model, with a wide round base, sometimes with spade-form fluted designs, and a slightly bulbous stem that tapered dramatically to a flaring bulb-shaped cup with a broad flange at the top.
A monumental pair of Kalo candlesticks, with their massive hammered stems and large-scale tulip-form bowls, is an extremely impressive sight. Below is a 15" pair alongside a pair that's slightly over 10" tall (the small pair has quite a bit of presence itself when it's not standing beside a set half again as high). The proportions of both pairs are similar, but the large pair dominates just about any room.

Kalo also made several kinds of chambersticks, and in 1928 tried adding a Norse Line of Scandinavian-inspired items for sale in retail stores (something it had never done previously). However, the experiment was short-lived because of the ensuing depression. Still, its small, ornate Norse candlesticks seem to have been well-accepted, and we've seen many of them. The console sets (center bowl flanked by two candlesticks) below were produced in two sizes.

In later years Kalo tried making modern-looking low candlesticks, and while these are accomplished, with fine hammering, and an interesting design, they simply don't compare with the tall classic forms shown here.

Candlestick, massive, squat, with wide round base, flat bottom, very large central bulb with oversize upturned rim and wire applied to rim. Two large arms curve upward from the neck then over and down to join two wide curved strap handles that attach to the underside of the rim in heart shape. Engraved ' "Eleanor" / In Memory of / E. Hurricane lamps, pair, composed of two candlestick bases plus two removable glass lamps. The candlesticks have saucer-shaped bottoms with upturned rims, and taper up toward the middle then flare out slightly at the top. The simple cup sits above a circular base for the glass lamps. The tulip-shaped lamps are thin and delicate, and are covered with cut glass designs of two rows with and shapes alternating with lens-like dots.
